Councils kick start youth with ‘First Start’

Published: 20th January 2017

Sunshine Coast Council trainee Bailey Boreham has secured a full-time job with the council’s parks and gardens division following the completion of his horticultural traineeship under the Queensland Government First Start Program.

The highly successful program provides funding assistance for young people to gain a qualification and a ‘first start’ into a career.

The traineeship includes nationally recognised qualifications and 12 months’ employment.

The 2017 round has allocated 300 traineeships across 63 councils. Several successful applicants have already started their traineeships and recruitment is in full swing to fill the remaining positions.

The LGAQ holds regular workshops with council Human Resources and Learning and Development Reference Groups with specific support related to the 2016-2017 First Start Program.
