Local government’s vulnerability to online scams and fraud burst into the spotlight again this week after several councils were targeted by various schemes involving false invoicing or bot attacks on websites.
The LGAQ has several online resources to alert councils to the potential for fraud to encourage them to be proactive in preventing fraud and online attacks.
Charters Towers Regional Council yesterday issued an urgent scam alert in response to reports of multiple attempts to illegally access funds.
Council CEO Mark Crawley said Council’s online payment system remained intact. However, he issued a warning to ratepayers.
“Council is advising all individuals who have conducted an online credit card or debit card transaction with this Council, to carefully check their statement to ensure that illegal transactions have not occurred,” Mr Crawley said.
The Queensland Government also regularly issued advice regarding scams.
