What makes Southern Downs proud? Ten facts and figures.

Published: 31st January 2019

When you used to say solar energy, you wouldn't say Southern Downs. But that's about to change, as The University of Queensland is building a massive solar farm in the region.

Here’s ten numbers that show why the Warwick Solar Farm project makes both Council and the community proud.

$125,000,000
The amount of money invested in building this solar farm.

160,000
That’s how many megawatt hours of renewable energy will be generated each year. To grasp that:

125,000
The number of tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year that will be replaced by this renewable power source.

Which is the equivalent to taking 48,600 cars off the road.

27,000
The number of homes that will be powered by this solar farm.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for the Southern Downs to diversify its economy and put the region on the map as a destination for renewable energy," Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said.

"You can see why."

2020
The year when the first solar energy will be harvested.

154
Hectares of solar panels. That’s almost 153 rugby fields.

100
The number of people that will work in the Southern Downs to build this project.

25
The minimum amount of years that The University of Queensland will be harvesting renewable energy from the solar plant.

With this project, The University of Queensland will be the first university in the world to offset 100% of its electricity usage with its own renewable energy assets.
