Queensland’s peak body for local councils has praised the quick response by Prime Minister Scott Morrison to the emerging crisis caused by last week’s unprecedented deluge in north Queensland.
The Local Government Association of Queensland welcomed Mr Morrison’s announcement that those local shires in north west Queensland hit by devastating stock losses will each have immediate access to $1 million to help pay for relief such as repairs to infrastructure and disposal of cattle that have perished in the floods.
LGAQ chief executive Greg Hallam said the payments will help councils respond rapidly to the crisis which has affected a vast swathe of north west Queensland.
“I thank the Prime Minister for this swift response to what is an unprecedented emergency for these shires,” he said.
