North Queensland mayors from Burdekin, Charters Towers, Hinchinbrook, Palm Island and Townsville met in Ingham this week with Deputy Premier and Planning Minister Jackie Trad and local MPs to discuss the progress on North Queensland’s first ever regional plan.
The regional plan sets a vision for North Queensland and develops a blueprint for the region's future. The plan is being prepared by the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning in consultation with local councils.
Ms Trad said the regional plan would help drive North Queensland’s economy, providing confidence for business and investors and connecting communities.
“It will also ensure the region’s identity is maintained and its diversity secure," she said.
Hinchinbrook Mayor Ramon Jayo said he believed a productive partnership was vital to the success of the plan.
"The five councils of North Queensland have come together as one and with the State Government’s leadership, we will have a clear path for years to come," he said.
"This will guide how our children and their children will live, work and play in North Queensland."
Regional plans have also been developed or are being developed for Cape York, Central Queensland, Darling Downs and South East Queensland.
