Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu has been appointed to the Library Board of Queensland.
The LGAQ advocated for the local government elected member position to be reinstated to the board after it was removed by the previous Newman government.
The reinstatement of the local government position on the board followed recommendations from the LGAQ. Cr Leu was nominated for the position by the LGAQ in 2014.
Cr Leu said she was feeling optimistic about the appointment.
“Libraries are vital to communities, particularly in rural and remote areas as social, educational and community hubs. I am very happy to be on the board as a local government voice for libraries across Queensland and will continue to highlight their importance as vital public spaces.”
Ms Leu has also been appointed to Chair of the Public Libraries Advisory Group which is an advisory group to the Library Board of Queensland.
The Queensland Library Board’s functions are to promote the advancement and effective operation and coordination of public libraries throughout the state, and to control, maintain and manage the State Library of Queensland.
Libraries play a key role in Queensland communities, with councils playing the major part in funding most of the 340 Queensland public libraries.
