SHARED GOALS INFORM LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACTION PLAN

Published: 21st April 2017

An action plan identifying the key goals Queensland’s local councils are pursuing as they work to improve the lives of the communities they represent has been released by the Local Government Association of Queensland.

Greater representation of Indigenous councillors on boards and committees, a fixed one per cent share of Commonwealth taxation revenue and a local government driven ‘data-lake’ are among the diverse priorities listed in the plan.

In officially launching the document yesterday, LGAQ President Mayor Mark Jamieson said the 2017 Advocacy Action Plan reflected the shared commitment of local government to create greater prosperity and well-being for communities.

“The Advocacy Action Plan is a point-in-time snapshot of the key issues facing local government in Queensland,” he said.

In his speech, Mayor Jamieson praised the success of the Works for Queensland program but also called for an amplification of its success by extending it into South-East Queensland.

“I applaud and welcome the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to job creation across Queensland,” he said.

“However, these are communities that should not be excluded due to their location and have pockets of high unemployment that need attention.”

Mayor Jamieson also pointed to the importance of creating a grants and subsidies framework enabling greater certainty and an improved capacity for councils to manage their assets over the long term as a key action item of the plan.
