In what is a testament to a unified and proactive local government sector in Queensland, 14 councils and the LGAQ were recognised at the Queensland Greats Awards this week for exemplary recovery efforts following Cyclone Debbie.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk presented recognition plaques to the 14 awarded councils that will be displayed at Roma Street Parkland in Brisbane.

The 2017 Institution Award was presented to the LGAQ for contribution to the response and recovery efforts following Tropical Cyclone Debbie.

Ms Palaszczuk said the awards and recognition given to both councils and the LGAQ acknowledged a cohesive and proactive attitude to disaster recovery,

“The response to Cyclone Debbie is a fantastic example of governments working together to achieve the best outcomes for Queenslanders and I thank each and every Mayor and their staff,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“LGAQ was at the forefront of our disaster recovery efforts following Cyclone Debbie,” she said.

“It is fitting that LGAQ is being recognised for its tireless contribution to our state, including coordinating and supporting local councils following our recent natural disaster.”

LGAQ President and Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson, who received the award on behalf of the LGAQ, said Queensland councils and communities’ response to the Cyclone Debbie was heartening,

“The spirit and resilience of those communities in times of adversity is one of Queensland’s lasting strengths and it guides and inspires the way the LGAQ goes about its work”. Mayor Jamieson said.
