An independent investigation into the cross-border transport of waste to Queensland landfills is now open for public submissions.
Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Steven Miles said the investigation would examine incentives for movement of waste and consider the case for reform.
“I encourage all transport, waste and recycling facility operators in New South Wales and South-East Queensland to provide written submissions to this investigation,” he said.
LGAQ Senior Advisor, Environmental and Public Health Robert Ferguson said the issue was most relevant to councils in southern Queensland adjacent to the NSW border.
“The LGAQ is seeking input into a submission we’ll be making to the investigation,” he said. “I encourage all councils in line for potential impacts to have their say.”
Retired Supreme Court Judge, the Hon Peter Lyons QC will lead the investigation.
Councils with feedback or comments to help inform the LGAQ submission should submit them via email to Robert_Ferguson@lgaq.asn.au by Wednesday 20th September 2017.
