Brisbane City Council has been certified as a 100% carbon neutral organisation under the Australian Government’s Carbon Neutral Program.
Now the largest carbon neutral certified organisation in Australia, Brisbane is the only certified organisation with an operating landfill and large public transport service.
The certification was a result of Council’s commitment to improve sustainability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Brisbane has twice been named Australia’s Most Sustainable City due to its sustainability practices over two decades.
Council has multiple clean energy and emissions reduction projects including:
- community composting hubs to reduce organic waste going to landfill
- diverting glass, paper and plastics from landfill for recycling
- the purchase and preservation of almost 4,000 hectares of natural bushland for future generations
- retrofitting 25,000 street lights with energy efficient lamps
- retrofitting the Story Bridge with LED lighting
- installing 502 kilowatts (kW) of solar power systems on council buildings, including 100kW systems at the Brisbane Powerhouse (pictured) and Toowong bus depot
- including electric vehicles in our passenger fleet
- trialling the use of biofuels, hybrid electric and smart transmission technology in public transport
- providing eco-driving training for council bus operators.
Brisbane City Council also recently joined the Climate Council’s Cities Power Partnership (CPP), a free national program championing clean energy in Australian towns and cities.
Brisbane plans to collaborate with other local governments to help achieve and expand sustainability goals across the country.
