Each year, Queensland councils gather at the LGAQ Annual Conference to debate the most urgent issues impacting their communities - and set the LGAQ's policy agenda for the next 12 months.

It's an example of grassroots democracy in action, and the biggest event in the Queensland local government calendar.

This year’s event is being held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from 29 – 31 October 2018.

About the agenda

Now is the time for councils to plan for submitting motions to this year’s LGAQ Annual Conference, occurring at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on 29 – 31 October 2018.

This year, we'll officially launch our brand-new process of electronic only submission for councils submitting motions for debate. All motions will now be lodged through LG Online using a simple form.

As in previous years, the Agenda will be in two parts: 

Part 1: Review of the Policy Statement, and
Part 2: Motions for Consideration.  

The Review of the Policy Statement will take place at the commencement of the Conference, so subsequent motions can be considered in line with the current Policy Statement.

What can councils be doing now?

Councils can start thinking of key policy issues that are a priority for their councils and communities, to submit as motions for debate at Annual Conference. 

Preparing a motion for submission requires collating all relevant facts and where appropriate, figures.  

Councils can also be browsing resolutions carried at previous annual conferences on the topic and what action has resulted from the resolution.

Think 'SMART'

Councils are encouraged to bear in mind the five ‘SMART’ principles in policy development:

• Be Specific (be clear in your desired outcome, with your audience in mind (i.e. State or Federal);
• Consider Measurables;
• Is it Achievable;
• Is it Realistic; and
• Is it Timely.

You can provide motions to the LGAQ at any point from Monday 2 July 2018 until the deadline on Friday 24 August 2018.
