Mayors from Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander council’s gathered at LGAQ’s Indigenous Leaders forum in Cairns this week.
Topics discussed included housing, alcohol management programs, environment, tourism and technology.
Councils showcased achievements and raised issues during the popular “Yarn-Up” sessions.
Lockhart River Aboriginal Shire Council Mayor Wayne Butcher said the even provides a key opportunity for collaboration,
"We get the 17 Indigenous Shires in Queensland to come together for a couple of days...as one we stand stronger...it's a strength the ILF can build upon and use it as a mechanism that gets our messages through to both the State and Federal Government."
The next Indigenous Leaders Forum will take place on 29 October 2018 at the Brisbane Convention Centre.
