Motion Submissions Open

Published: 2nd July 2018

The LGAQ Annual Conference (29-31 October 2018) is the biggest event in the Queensland local government calendar and we’re now calling on members to help set the agenda.

We are now inviting members to submit a motion to be debated at the upcoming conference, and we’re excited to officially launch the new online submission portal.

How to lodge a submission?

Lodging a submission is a two-step process.

  1. Any motion created must first be agreed to and approved through your own council process. For this to happen, we’ve created an easy to use template https://bit.ly/2KGWAOH which will assist you in drafting a motion before requesting your council approve it.
  2. Once a draft motion has been approved by your council, you can login to LG Online and use our online portal to lodge the submission here http://bit.ly/LGAQmotions.

The portal is easy to use and open until Friday 24 August 2018.

*The online portal does not have a save function.

Think 'SMART'

Councils are encouraged to bear in mind the five ‘SMART’ principles in policy development:

  • Be Specific (be clear in your desired outcome, with your audience in mind (i.e. State or Federal);
  • Consider Measurables;
  • Is it Achievable;
  • Is it Realistic; and
  • Is it Timely.

Why motions are important

The LGAQ Annual Conference is an example of grassroots democracy in action. It’s an opportunity for members to discuss the most urgent issues impacting communities, as well as to help set the policy agenda for LGAQ over the next 12 months.

All motions must be submitted by Friday 24 August 2018.

The LGAQ has a searchable archive of past motions submitted by councils. You can browse it here.
