Local government is mourning the passing of Winton Shire Mayor Butch Lenton, who died at the weekend after a long illness.
Local Government Association of Queensland President Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said Cr Lenton’s leadership and foresight helped Winton endure drought and economic hardship and ensured the town emerged as one of the brightest jewels in Queensland’s outback.
He said Cr Lenton worked hard to make sure the iconic Waltzing Matilda centre was rebuilt after being razed to the ground in 2015.
'Butch was a great leader and a good mate to many, including me,' Mayor Jamieson said.
'He will be remembered for a lot of things but his most lasting legacy will be the memory of a thoroughly decent human being,' he said.
'The LGAQ passes on our condolences to Butch’s wife, Ros, and their family and friends as well as the people of Winton.'
