Local government must retain a seat at the table should COAG be scrapped in favour of a permanent National Cabinet, to ensure communities are not left out of the conversation.
Local Government Association of Queensland President, Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson, said councils had been represented at the COAG table through the Australian Local Government Association as part of a long-standing arrangement.
He called on leaders participating in today’s National Cabinet meeting to ensure local government representation is maintained, should they decide to make the National Cabinet process permanent.
“Councils have retained a seat at the COAG table for a reason,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“Local government is the level of government closest to the community. Councils offer a unique perspective other levels of government simply do not have.
“If COAG is to be replaced with National Cabinet then all three levels of government must be represented there as well.
“National Cabinet is a powerful body, making decisions that affect communities across the country. Local government is doing its share of the heavy lifting as well.
“The Premier of Queensland has proven the power of working collaboratively with local government. We trust she will advocate for councils through these discussions.
“Councils and their communities cannot be left in the dark. Ensuring the voices of those at the grassroots are heard will ensure we govern for all Australians.”
