Disappointment as post-flood disaster valuations should have been postponed

The peak body representing Queensland councils is disappointed emergency action was not taken to pause the valuations process following Queensland’s floods disaster as happened following the 2010/11 summer of disasters.

“We would have hoped the valuations process would have been postponed as happened in 2011 – and affected councils properly consulted,” LGAQ CEO Alison Smith said.

“Instead this process has been allowed to continue.

“This is the last thing flood-impacted Queenslanders and councils need right now. Many are too busy rebuilding their homes to have to also shoulder the stress of trying to appeal the Valuer-General’s decision.

“Queensland is the country’s most disaster-prone state so there must be a permanent mechanism to ensure the Valuer-General can pause this process following a major disaster.

“The State should also run annual valuations to minimise significant fluctuations that can happen when a suburb or area is not valued for several years.”
