Funding boost for Logan's sporting women

Published: 9th August 2021

Logan City Council has launched a Game on for Women (GOFW) initiative to increase female participation in sport.

The intiative, built on the inaugural GOFW program in 2019, has been rebooted after Council was successful in securing $100,000 from the Queensland Government's Active KIT grants program.

It's also allocating a further $77,000 from the Logan Sports Development Program, co-funded by the Brisbane Lions Football Club and Council.

The GOFW initiative aims to support City of Logan women both on and off the field as sports players, coaches, officials, and leaders, and will be delivered across three key elements:

1. Inclusive clubs

The program will support 20 City of Logan-based community sport clubs to complete Inclusive Participation Plans. The clubs will be guided through the process and invited to nominate women from their club to attend a leadership masterclass and accredited training.

2. Sporting women's network

Previous GOFW participants and new ones are invited to attend networking events throughout the year.

3. Bursary

Two $5000 bursaries will be awarded to support local women to study a sport-related degree.

City Lifestyle Chair Councillor Laurie Koranski said Council is committed to ensuring sport is accessible to everyone.

“Sport and being active plays such an important role in our community and it’s important for Council to provide programs that encourage healthy activities,” Cr Koranski said.

“We’re keen to encourage women to play sport.

“We are hoping the Game on for Women program will provide incentives for more women to get engaged in sport across the city.”

GOFW strategically supports Council’s endorsed Active Logan Strategy Implementation Plan 2020-2024.
