Responding to Racism

Racism exists in our society in many forms. Racist attitudes are often not recognised for what they are. Racist acts include written, spoken and non-verbal body language.

‘Racism’ refers to any beliefs, attitudes, or behaviours which reflect an assumption of one cultural group’s superiority over other groups.

Reasons for racism may include fear or insecurity based on:

  • Lack of experience interacting with people from different cultural backgrounds
  • False information
  • Generalisations
