Sustainable NRM is recognised as an essential component of responsible environmental management. Across Queensland, many local governments are actively involved in managing natural resources, which are fundamental to our quality of life and our economic and social well-being both now and in the future.
Local Government has a range of functions, powers and responsibilities at its disposal to influence natural resource management on both private and public land. These include:
planning and land use management
community support
development and education incentive programs
NRM regulation and enforcement
Many local governments are now in a position to participate in a range of programs in partnership with community-based regional NRM bodies aimed at achieving sustainable NRM.
The Local Government Association of Queensland in partnership with the Australian and State Governments is delivering a state-wide training and support program to directly assist Local Government involvement in the development and implementation of regional NRM approaches to land-use and planning. The project supports all councils in Queensland including the Aboriginal and Island Councils.

Triple Bottom Line Software
The TBL software is designed to be used by councils as a preliminary project evaluation tool by providing an indicative guide on the comparative financial, economic, social and environmental impacts of a project or groups of projects. This will enable councils to identify the returns from environmental investment which will assist decisions regarding the allocation of resources to ensure sustainable environmental management into the future.
