Landfill is still the most used option for municipal waste disposal.  Most Councils continue to operate landfill sites in Queensland.  Exiting landfills are licensed under the Environmental Protection legislation.  The landfill site has to be managed in a safe and healthy manner to maximise waste containment and minimise environmental impacts of waste degradation.

Monitoring and data collection at a landfill site is critical to ensure the delivery of strategic management and predicting the remaining life in the landfill.  In addition remediation and rehabilitation of existing sites is required so they can be used for community and commercial use.
