Incorporating Disaster Management into Local Government Corporate Planning - A Practical Guide for Corporate Planners

Recent experience has demonstrated that disaster management remains a significant and important activity for councils.  The ability of councils to develop and maintain a capacity for disaster management planning and operations is a key factor in helping to ensure the safety and well-being of our local residents - as well as the resilience and sustainability of our communities.

Human Influenza Pandemic Planning

Considerable national and international media attention has been given to the risk of Avian Influenza becoming the next human influenza pandemic. The World Health Organisation has recommended that countries begin preparedness planning for such a possibility.  In response the Queensland Government has established a Task Force to undertake whole of government planning for the possible threat of human pandemic influenza.

Planning is being conducted at all levels of Government.  The LGAQ, working in collaboration with the State Government and with Brisbane City Council have developed Local Government Planning Notes - Pandemic Influenza.   These planning notes provide guidance to councils on measures to ensure appropriate preparedness for a Pandemic should it eventuate.

In addition, to assist local governments to understand the nature of the Human Influenza Pandemic threat a number of Quick Links have been compiled.  These links point to various State/Federal and International websites with relevant information on both the Human and Avian Influenza threat.

For more detail on Pandemic Planning please contact Michael Dickinson, Disaster Management Alliance Project Officer, DMAlliance@lgaq.asn.au or 3000 2102.
