Community Engagement

Definitions

Community Engagement refers to the connections between governments, citizens and communities on a wide range of policy, program and service issues.  It can be formal or informal.  The LGAQ understands community engagement to contain the following elements:

  1. Information:To provide the public with balanced and objective information on decisions, policies, plans and strategies.
  2. Consultation: To obtain public feedback on analysis and alternatives to inform a decision.
  3. Participation:  Is made up of several parts..
  • Involvement: To work directly with the public so that community concerns are consistently understood and considered
  • Collaboration: To partner with the public in each aspect of the decision process – including the development of alternatives and identification of a solution.
  • Empowerment/delegation: To place a final decision in the hands of the community.

Community engagement is also a pillar of a democracy.

Local Governments are elected to oversee a ‘good governance process’.

The elements of a good governance process are:

- Community participation
- Sound policy development
- Management of assets
- Accountability/transparency
