Murray Darling deal welcomed

Wednesday, 16 May 2018

The LGAQ and Balonne Shire Council have welcomed the Federal Government’s deal with Labor to ensure the Murray-Darling Basin Plan remains intact, with most recommendations from the Northern Basin review agreed on.

The move gives much needed certainty for irrigation-dependent communities along the northern rivers.

In an interview (shown below) soon after the deal was announced, Balonne Shire Deputy Mayor, Fiona Gaske described the outcome as momentous.

The Northern Basin review showed communities were in decline as a result of water buy backs. Residents in towns including St George and Dirranbandi recognised the need to protect the environment while weighing up the impact on people forced to use less water.

Councillor Gaske said it was a great partnership with LGAQ as councillors lobbied both sides of government.

“Now the future is looking very rosy. It is momentous to think after all this time and significant pain for our community, there are great outcomes for the environment, indigenous communities, and business confidence,” the Deputy Mayor said.

“To see the spirit come back into the community is buoyed by the fact that this is a bi-partisan deal. Politicians have indeed put the people first.”
