Have your say on product stewardship
Review of the Product Stewardship Act 2011 (including the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme)
The Act provides the framework to effectively manage the environmental, health and safety impacts of products, and in particular those impacts associated with the disposal of products and their associated waste.
The framework includes voluntary, co-regulatory and mandatory product stewardship schemes and is of significant relevance to local government. This is an opportunity to address local government concerns in relation to a number of problem waste streams and to work towards greater ownership of these problems from key industry groups.
The Department of Environment and Energy (Commonwealth) is seeking input from industry, governments and the general public to ensure the Product Stewardship Act 2011 (the Act) is effective and delivering the best outcomes for business and the environment.
The LGAQ will be making a submission to the Department and is seeking your input into this matter. If you wish your comments to be included in the LGAQ submission please advise Robert Ferguson, Senior Advisor - Environmental and Public Health via email by Friday, 8 June 2018. Please contact Robert with further enquiries 1300 542 700.
Alternatively, you may wish to submit your own submission to the Department.
The LGAQ has been advised that as part of the consultation process the Department will hold public meetings in all capital cities across Australia.
This is an opportunity for councils and industry to provide input to the review, learn more about key issues and initiatives, and provide feedback to the Department. As part of this consultation, there will be morning session for the public, industry and recyclers, however there will also be a separate afternoon meeting with representatives from the state and local government sector in Brisbane on 23rd May 2018.
Please contact the Department to register your interest in the forum.
The Department is undertaking a number of activities associated with the review:
- making minor amendments to the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme, to take effect from 1 July 2018
- developing a Product Impact Management Strategy to support a shared approach to product stewardship by the Australian, state, territory and local governments, and
- reinvigorating the scheme for accreditation of voluntary product stewardship arrangements.
The Department has also been gathering views and information to inform the review from a number of different sources, and will continue to do so over the coming months. This will include engaging external service providers to provide input or advice on specific matters.
