Qld Councils Speak for their Communities: recent LGAQ submissions

GREAT ARTESIAN BASIN SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE (GABSI) - CONTINUED FUNDING

The LGAQ provided a submission to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for State Infrastructure and Regional Development on 29 May 2014.
Submission perspective: Following the recent announcement of the 2014-15 Federal Budget, the LGAQ sought consideration and commitment from the Federal Government to continue funding of the GABSI after June 2014. Queensland local governments have considered the GABSI to be an environmental success.

STRONG CHOICES FOR QUEENSLAND

The LGAQ provided a submission to Queensland Treasurer and Minister for Trade on the 14 May 2014.
Submission perspective: With the consultation of member councils, the LGAQ called on the State Government to not only maintain current levels of funding but also to commence the return of infrastructure funding to councils to the pre-2012 budget levels.

LIABILITY FOR PLANNING DECISIONS AFFECTED BY CLIMATE CHANGE

The LGAQ has provided a submission to the Minister for Local Government, Community Recovery and Resilience on 9 May 2014.
Submission perspective: Following the changes to the Queensland Government's State Planning Policy to remove mandated climate change factors, the LGAQ sought legal advice to gain understanding of the particular legal risks associated with local government plan making and development approval. The legal advice prepared by King & Company was provided to all Queensland coastal councils.

MODERNISING QUEENSLAND'S RESOURCES ACTS PROGRAM - LAND ACCESS CONSULTATION DRAFT

Submission by the LGAQ to the Department of Natural Resources and Mines on 17 April 2014.
Submission perspective: The LGAQ has proposed that the Queensland Government closely collaborate with local government to determine appropriate timelines for consultation. Such collaboration would seek to ensure the provisions associated to the review of the Program accurately capture the impacts of authorised activities on public roads.

MODERNISING QUEENSLAND'S RESOURCES ACTS PROGRAM - ALLUVIAL CONSULTATION DRAFT

The LGAQ provided a letter submission to the Department of Natural Resources and Mines on 17 April 2014.
Submission perspective: The LGAQ has provided comments to the Department's Modernising Queensland's Resources Acts (MQRA) Program, which aims to replace the existing legislation with a single, common Act governing all resource tenure.
