ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Queensland councils continue to act as local leaders on the frontline of disaster management planning, mitigation, response and recovery for our disaster-prone state.

Their role is critical to the building of local disaster resilience as well as supporting Queensland communities before, during and after these challenging times.

Meanwhile, communities continue to demand increasingly sophisticated responses from councils and council-led Local Disaster Management Groups. The provision of timely and accurate information to the community has never been of greater importance.

Changes to community profiles as well as our own understanding of disaster hazards further exacerbates challenges faced by councils, as does community growth and development pressure, which increases the number of people exposed to events.

As current modelling for heightened intensity and frequency of future natural disaster events continue to roll in, it’s timely for councils to consider how they’ll meet the challenges of the future.

‘Our New Conversation’ will bring together leading local and national strategic thinkers, planners and practitioners, as well as draw on key state partners from government agencies, NGOs and the private sector.
