First Freezing works in Queensland

Image credit: Queensland GovernmentIn 1891 the first freezing works was established on the Ross River, Townsville, allowing for the export meat trade to the United Kingdom to commence.

Located on the banks of Ross River in suburban Townsville, the 130 foot (39.6m) high brick chimney remains the principal surviving evidence of an important meatworks in Queensland during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century.
